John Kirkham Competes in the Duathlon European Qualifier

Herrera Homes Director, John Kirkham, competed in the Duathlon European Qualifier in October this year, pitting together some of the most finely tuned athletes in the country. Unfortunately I was NOT one of those! - despite having all the gear! (and no idea).

Since early 20's I've been into my running and cycling and regularly exercise to keep the recruitment demons at bay. Since starting Herrera Homes in October 2019, my commute has been reduced to zero and so getting out and about to let off some steam has been as important as ever and during lockdown I ended up being a 'Zwifter' - basically cycling on a stationary trainer indoors but with an online community to race against.

That in turn led to Herrera Homes sponsoring my Zwift team, Apache Brave Racing and that led to me and several friends entering the race at Oulton Park to compete against each other other like-minded individuals in a 'Sprint' duathlon - a 4.3km run, a 21.60km cycle followed by another 4.3 km run, unofficially racing under my online Zwift team name, Apache Brace Racing.

And how did I do?

Well, I finished 98th out of around 250, competing against some seriously fast athletes as it was a European Championship Qualifier. If anyone is interested in my stats (nope, just me?) they are below:

4.3km run in 17.35 minutes - average 14.67 km/h / 4.06mins per km.

21.6km cycle in 36.03 minutes - average 35.95 km/h.

4.3km run in 18.37 minutes - average 13.86 km/h / 4.20mins per km.

Total time including transitions: 1 hour, 15 minutes, 15 seconds.

A great day was had by (almost) all and, if I can keep the Christmas pudding to a minimum, I'll give it another shot in March.
